Mississauga is located west of Toronto, and is a part of the Regional Municipality of Peel (or Peel Region) in the central part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The city borders along the shores of Lake Ontario, and is Canada's sixth-most populous municipality with an ever growing diverse population.
The city has a unique history, going back over 200 years. French traders in the early 1600’s encountered Natives, called the Mississaugas, an Ojibwa band located around the northern part of Lake Huron. By the early 1700’s they migrated south and settled in the area around the Etobicoke Creek, Credit River and Burlington Bay. The name itself, “Mississauga” is an Anishinaabe term that roughly translates to “River of the North of Many Mouths.”
Originally a suburb of Toronto, has grown due to its proximity to the downtown core. The city is home to Canada’s busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport with thousands of international and domestic flights occurring daily. Mississauga has become a major destination for business development and corporate headquarters, boasting 73 Fortune 500 companies located in the city alone. A huge influencer during its development was former Mayor, Hazel Mccallion, also known as “Hurricane Hazel.” Before retiring in 2014, she was the world's oldest mayor, serving 36 years at the age of 93. Her service has transformed Mississauga to a thriving, developing metropolitan city it is now.
Mississauga has become one of the most active and multicultural cities in Ontario. They celebrate their diversity, sports teams, and culture in many ways; encouraging its residents to go out and enjoy its facilities and activities. The city pride’s itself with a large repertoire of 6 art galleries, 3 museums, and 7 performance art centres – most notably Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre. Its international shopping centre, Square One has millions of shoppers visiting every year. People can find everyday wear to luxury brands, including Holt Renfrew, Salvatore Ferragamo and Simons. The city boasts hip & chic boutiques, restaurants, clubs and patios at Celebration Square or Streetville Village – a happening place for young professionals and families. The city hosts the largest multicultural festival in Ontario, Carassauga, an annual multicultural festival featuring culinary and artistic performances. Other festivals include Mississauga Rotary Ribfest, Waterfront Festival, Movies in the Park, and the Blues & Jazz Festival.
Mississauga is a thriving sports city, its two largest teams include: The Mississauga Steelheads, a junior hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing at the Hershey Centre; and The Raptors 905, a Canadian professional basketball team in the NBA Development League where people can watch future pro basketball stars play.
The city has more than 500 parks, 20 trails, and gardens to explore.
