Hamilton is located at the southwestern point of the Golden Horseshoe off of Lake Ontario. The city sits on the western end of the Niagara Peninsula, close to the Escarpment. With a healthy population, the city is listed as the ninth largest in Canada since 1981 and is the third largest in Ontario. The community that made up the Regional Municipality of Hamilton–Wentworth was amalgamated with other surrounding towns to eventually create the wonderful city of Hamilton. With a booming housing market, the population that currently sits at approx. 537,000 people are steadily increasing due to newly arrived immigrants, half arriving from Asia and the Middle East, and a quarter from Europe. There are many different demographics that make up the city’s population with a high proportion of people of Italian, English, Scottish, German and Irish ancestry.

The city originated as Native grounds belonging to the Neutrals, Iroquois and Huron people. The first natives settled in the Hamilton area called the Bay ‘macassa’, meaning “beautiful waters”. After the arrival of British settlers and colonization, ‘macassa’ was acquired by George Hamilton. He purchased the lands from James Durand, a member of the British parliament after the War of 1812. Hamilton offered his land to the British Crown for future development and sold his properties which later became the town’s site with a member appointed to the Legislative Assembly. As a result, the town of Hamilton was born.

Over the years, Hamilton has developed from a small town into a robust city. It is the most highly industrialized region of Canada, with sixty percent of Canada’s steel produced by Stelco and Dofasco. Its large manufacturing sector has given the city the nickname as the “Steel Capital of Canada”. Furthermore, the city is well known for its several post-secondary institutions like Mohawk & Columbia International which have created numerous jobs in the education and research sectors. The city’s most renowned institution, McMaster University, ranks consistently as one of the top 5 universities in Canada for its disciplines and research in engineering, health, and medical sciences.

Hamilton also has numerous public parks, trails, and beaches that are great for an outdoor adventure or a quiet retreat. With over 14 parks some of the larger conservation areas include Confederation Beach Park, Christie Lake, Fifty Point, Valen’s Lake, and Tiffany Falls. People can enjoy activities like hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, paddling and canoeing, picnicking, horseback riding trails, and outdoor facilities for soccer and volleyball games. Hamilton is a mecca for campers and outdoor enthusiasts. The city has many initiatives and protections to maintain its green spaces and wildlife.

Hamilton is the proud home of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where people can watch the 15-time champions play on the famous Tim Horton’s Field. Locals can also watch the Hamilton Bulldogs, an OHL hockey team stationed at FirstOntario Centre, also known as Copp’s Coliseum. Additionally, residents don’t have to go far to enjoy speeding down a racetrack. With Flamboro & Cayuga International Speedway both professional and amateurs can have a fun time automobile racing.
